A Roman Gypsum Oil Lamp Mold, Tunisia, ca. 200-400 AD mold for the top half of the distinctive redware oil lamps from Northern Africa, with high peaked handle, round body and elongated rounded nozzle, the concave discus decorated with a stylized palm tree the branches full of leaves and fruit and bordered by a band of protecting concentric circles alternating with three petal flower motifs.

The Tree of Life was an important symbol in Roman culture. With its branches reaching into the sky, and roots deep in the earth, it dwells in three worlds- a link between heaven, the earth, and the underworld, uniting above and below. It is both a feminine symbol, bearing sustenance, and a masculine, visibly phallic symbol- another union. Private Australian collection since 1970s. Height: 8 1/4 inches (21 cm)
