M. McLaughlin writes somewhat ungrammatically to Benjamin and Rebecca Mars. War-date ALS, 4 pp, “Cliffburn Barracks, near Washington City,” May 4, 1863. McLaughlin relates that he is in good health and feels “first rate” but “I tell you I have been pretty hard up for money and in fact I am not much better off yet...I think we will get some from the government before long...” He writes regarding family and friends and advises, “Our company is scattered all over the City of Washington. This morning they sent up here for men to go to the City to guard Rebel Prisoners. Since yesterday morning there was a thousand came into the city. I think Old Hooker must be giving them fits at least I hopes...” McLaughlin feels his unit has “just got the Best captain that I ever saw, he boards with us and sleeps with us and wrestels and tares around just like a private and I don’t think he would swear a profane oath or drink a drink of whisky to save his life and in place of having Sunday morning inspection he puts it off till Monday morning...he is worth a whole Regiment. Like John Wilson our first Lieutenant is taken Prisoner some time ago, he took a squad of men down to Tenisee and they got him, he is now at Anapolass at the Parroll Camp...” He relates that one of his best friends died of measles, the second to die since they arrived there. He concludes, “there is to be a whole snarl of Rebbls in here today...” General toning, occasional ink stains; o/w VG.
