In initially confronting the issues of how and why a work is made there can be no substitute for the artist's own voice...LeWitt set out the ideas which gave him the freedom to develop. He debunked the pernicious tendency of labeling art only to limit it: "...the idea or concept is the most important aspect of the work...[it] is not necessarily logical...Ideas are discovered by intuition." The risk of relying on intuition was mitigated by using a present plan or game theory which was "one way of avoiding subjectivity" - a tendency which diverted attention and energy away from content. LeWitt remains categorical about the importance of content: "Art that emphasizes content (such as mine) cannot be seen or understood in a context of form. This is a large and crucial difference. It cannot be said that what looks alike is alike. If one wishes to understand the art of our time one must go beyond appearance."
