SMITH, MARTIN L.
(1819 - 1866) Confederate major general who constructed the fortifications at Vicksburg and commanded forces in the defense of the city. Captured and paroled, he later constructed the defenses of Mobile. Rare war-date A.L.S. "M. L. Smith" as brigadier general, 1p., 8vo. [n.p.] Sept. 19, 1862, to an unknown colonel, in part: "...Can you not allow your wagons to haul the provisions for the negroes…I have directed Gen. [J. A.] Wharton to send to Yazoo bottom and further up all the persons serving there, and hold them subject to orders, if within the conscription age, the law declares them deserters for not going to camp…I understand that the services of men in the secret service are to be paid for to an allowable extent. Rations for the negroes will be sent up tomorrow...". Very good.
