SMITH, JOSEPH
(1790 - 1877) War of 1812 veteran severely wounded at the Battle of Lake Champlain, later served as Union rear admiral and chief of the Bureau of Yards and Docks, sat on the commission that approved the building of the Monitor. A.N.S. "Jos. Smith" on 1p. 4to., Warrenton, N. C., March 21, 1861 penned upon an A.L.S. addressed to the admiral recommending a friend for a government position. Smith writes four lines in reply endorsing the recommendation. Very good.
