SMALL SEGMENT OF A MACHINE GUN BELT FROM ONE OF T
SMALL SEGMENT OF A MACHINE GUN BELT FROM ONE OF THE GUNS IN VON RICHTHOFEN’S FOKKER DR I FOKKER TRI-PLANE 425/17. Gray/tan, herringbone woven, cotton fabric containing two riveted metal spacers from von Richthofen’s machine gun belt. A series of these riveted spacers creates the individual pockets for each round of ammunition. Three rivets secure the spacers, one on each side of the belt. Lt. F. R. Rawlinson, No. 3 Sqdn, Australian Flying Corps, originally salvaged a larger section of this belt, and removed this section before donating the larger piece to the Canberra War Memorial. This segment became part of the Charles Donald collection. The envelope mailed from Australia containing this section, a certification of authenticity from Charles Donald to Carisella, and a photograph of the larger section are included. A photograph of the larger section appears on page 231 of Who Killed The Red Baron? CONDITION: Good for its age with the metal spacer bars showing light rust in spots. SIZE: 1-1/4” long x 1-5/8” wide. From the Collection of the late P. J. Carisella. 4-53515 CW16 (1,500-2,000)
