SMALL HANDWRITTEN VICTORIAN CIRCULAR MEMORIAL TO
SMALL HANDWRITTEN VICTORIAN CIRCULAR MEMORIAL TO CONFEDERATEGENERAL ALBERT SIDNEY JOHNSTON, CSA. This curious little piece of paper, measuring 3-1/2" x 3-3/4", has a circle measuring 3-3/8" in diameter and within has tiny writing in concentric circular fashion as follows: "Albert Sidney Johnston, an American soldier, was born in Mason, Co., Kentucky in 1803. He graduated at West Point in 1826. He served as Adjutant General during the Black Hawk War. After the close of the war he resigned and went to Texas where he enlisted in the Texas army as a private soldier and rose to the chief command. He afterward served a Secretary of War. He served in the Mexican War being in command of a Texan brigade. After the close of the war he was made Paymaster. In 1855 he was made Colonel of Cavalry and served in Texas for two years. Among his officers were the following: - Robert E. Lee, Lieutenant - Colonel; William J Hardee, Major; Earl Van Dorn, E. Kirby Smith and George Stonemen, Captains. In 1858 he was placed in command of the expedition sent across the plains into Utah and was the absolute dictator of the country he occupied. In 1860 he was placed in command of the Department of the Pacific and was making preparations to turn the State of California to the Confederacy when he was superseded by Col. E.V. Summer. He resigned and entered the Confederate Service with the Rank of a full General. He was sent to the west and raised and equipped an army. At daylight on April 6, 1862 he fell upon Grant's army at Shiloh and surprised it. He took 2,000 prisoners in their camps. A bloody battle was fought and at half passed two o'clock in the afternoon he was struck by a rifle-ball in the leg severing an artery and he died from loss of blood". An interesting and attractive memorial to one of the Confederacy's first fallen heroes. 4-556025 CW42 (400-600)
