SLOCUM, JOSHUA
(1844 - ?) Canadian sailor and shipowner. On his tiny sailboat, the Spray, Slocum became the first person to single-handedly sail around the world, setting sail from Boston on April 24, 1895 and returning home three years, two months and two days later. Superlative A.L.S. written on the very day Slocum sailed from North America on the trans-Atlantic leg of his famous voyage, 1p. 8vo., Yarmouth, Nova Scotia,, July 2, 1895 to a Mr. Hardy, likely a publisher. In part: "…I sail this morning. This is the first fine day and fair wind. I like the turn[?] you gave my poor nightmare - as a sample it is about as bad as I may be well able to do. Will try to give you an interesting account from Fayal and again from Gibraltar…". Light toning, else very good. Slocum's letters are rare, especially so of this quality.
