SLAVE NECK COLLAR.

Wrought iron circular collar w/ 2 blacksmith welded extensions. A collar like this could have been used as punishment, wearing it would make it difficult to sleep or do normal activities. It had a simple closure that required a padlock. The curled tip extensions could have originally held bells. In Antibellum contemporary text by abolitionist Theodore Weld “American Slavery As It Is” describes the use of a collar near Charleston SC “ A Handsome mulatto woman about 18-20 years of age, who’s independent spirit could not brook the degradation of slavery was in the habit of running away. For this offence she was repeatedly whipped & a heavy iron collar w/ three long prongs projecting from it was placed round her neck, a strong & sound front tooth was extracted to serve as a mark to describe her, in case of escape.” CONDITION: good overall, iron patina. (02-16651-1/JS.) $3,000-4,000.
