SLAVE AUCTION ADVERTISEMENTS IN NEW ORLEANS NEWSPAPER
A large selection on slave advertisements, including the auction of an entire riverfront plantation with about 600 acres and 71 named slaves, all contained within The Daily True Delta, Nov. 24, 1859. The paper contains nine smaller ads with woodcuts of slaves, variously proclaiming: "I have received NEAR ONE HUNDRED NEGROES on consignment...Foster's Slave Depot...Carolina and Virginia Negroes for Sale...a large supply of all classes of NEGROES...", etc. The auction advertisement in 11" long and lists each slave's name, age, occupation, family relationship, and any defect or infirmity. This was a fairly large plantation, with 30 mules, 12 horses, and all fixtures offered for sale. The owner, perhaps with great intuition, states that he "...leave the Parish and go to Europe...". Just in time. Typical marginal chipping, else very good.

Estimate: $150 - 200.
