SKINNY WAINWRIGHT`S GENERAL STAR
210. "SKINNY" WAINWRIGHT'S GENERAL'S STAR JONATHAN M. WAINWRIGHT (1883 - 1953) "Skinny", American general who defended Bataan and Corregidor after MacArthur's withdrawal early in World War II. An excessively rare and superb offering, an original note along with one of "Skinny's" personal general star! The A.N.S., "Skinny Wainwright" 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], to Helen Boone, wife of Gen. Milton Boone, reads in full: "To dear Helen Boone, This is one of the stars that I wore in the Campaign [sic] of North Luzon Bataan and Corregidor. Sincerely Skinny Wainwright". At top, Wainwright has affixed one of his original silver general's star measuring approximately 1" in diameter. Simply matted and framed, ready for display. Along with an original Western Union telegram, 1p. 8vo., San Antonio, Sept. 2, 1953, sent by Wainwright's son, Capt. Jonathan Wainwright, announcing the death of his father, in part: "IT IS WITH DEEP REGRET THAT I INFORM YOU OF THE DEATH OF MY FATHER GENERAL WAINWRIGHT RETIRED CMM AT 1227 PM 2 SEP 53...CHAPEL SVC WILL BE HELD AT POST CHAPEL CMM FT SAM HOUSTON TEXAS AT 1000 AM...BURIAL WILL BE IN ARLINGTON...". Loss at lower right and wear top edges, else good condition, simply framed. Finally, this superb lot includes a vintage photograph, 10" x 8" b/w, showing Wainwright and other officers with four Japanese soldiers, after having been taken prisoner in Luzon, Philippines, on Aug. 5, 1942. The photo is signed in the negative by many of the officers present, including Maxon S. Lough, A. J. Dunk, George F. Moore, E. P. King, W. E. Brougher, Lewis K. Beeke, C. C. Drake, and others. It is accompanied by a fine content T.L. (unsigned) 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d.], by Clifford Bluemel, one of the prisoners, describing the circumstances of this photograph, in part: "...This picture was taken, as I remember, on Aug. 5, 1942, about a week or less before we left this camp for Formosa (Taiwan). The location is the former Philippine Army Camp at Tarlac, Luzon (P.I.), about 160 kilometers north of Manila. The Generals and Colonels were moved to this camp on May 10, 1942, from Camp O'Donnell a few days after the fall of Corregidor. The Jap with the mustache is Lt. Col. Ito, who apparently had charge of this camp...He was the best Jap officer we had over us...One day, about a week before this was taken, he gave the Generals a party in our mess hall. Coffee, toast (white bread) and jam. Also two bottles of fair liquor...The Jap on his left...is the Lt. Who took us to Takao Taiwan where he turned us over to the Taiwan Army. The Jap in the white shirt wearing a saber...is Corporal Nishiama who had immediate charge of the Tarlac camp. He was disagreeable at first but Col. Hoffman, who spoke Japanese, worked on him...Brig. Gen. A. C. McBride, with the beard, died about May 20, 1944 during the night. While working on the farm....he ate a handful of uncooked beans...". Both the photograph and letter are simply framed. Four pieces in all. A better Wainwright grouping would be difficult to amass! $1,500-2,000
