(SIR JOHN JOHNSTON)
(1742 - 1830) Loyalist leader in the Mohawk Valley, son of Sir William Johnston, led numerous raids in upstate New York in cooperation with Joseph Brandt. Interesting manuscript D.S. 2pp. 4to., [n.p., n.d. c. 1780] entitled ""The examination of the Two Onandaga Indians Taken prisoners at Swagotsha"", likely in the wake of Johnson's raid on Socarchie. In full: ""Quest 1st. How the State of the Garrison of Swagotsha was. Aswr. That the Garrison was commanded by Capt. Davis with one Subaltern and Forty men and had Four pieces of Cannon 2ndly. What news from Canada answered that they had Received a Letter form the Commander in Chief at Quebec informing them that he could send them no Troops against the Rebels this Year But they so that they must act only on the Defensive at present -- 3rdly. In what State the Garrison of Buck Island was He answered that the Last week he had left that Place and that they were Fortifying themselves. He farther said that the Garrisons Consisted of a Few Regulars and Sir Johns Regiment making In the whole not more than Two Hundred men And that they had a Disorder amongst them of which they died very fast and that that no other reasons made him and some others Leave that place. He further says that Yesterday Genl. Haldermans aide de camp passed that place With orders to the Commanding officer of the Back Forty"". Certainly worthy of much further research. Usual folds, ragged left margin, otherwise very good.
