A decorated veteran of WW I, he led the British forces in East Africa defeating Italy in Abyssinia. As commander of the British 8th Army, he was outfought by Rommel and so dismissed by Auchinleck and transferred to Northern Ireland; High Commissioner of Palestine (1945-48). <b>War-date</b> ALS, 2pp, 8vo, Aug 6, 1944. On Headquarters, Northern Ireland letterhead to Brigadier General Vanderveer at 5th Division Headquarters, US Army, regarding a gift from his wife. In part, “<i>I received recently from Mrs. Vanderveer a copy of ‘John Brown’s Body’...I am looking forward to reading the book and getting a more romantic and perhaps less pedantic view of those days...as I pen</i> [this] <i>your armored is reaching out and the situation is fraught with great possibilities. Good luck to you in your great battle. I only wish I was there to share it with you</i>...” Accompanied by stamped transmittal envelope.
