<p><b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial;color:windowtext'>SIR ALAN CUNNINGHAM </span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial; color:windowtext'>(1887-1983). A decorated veteran of WW I, he led the British forces in East Africa defeating Italy in Abyssinia. As commander of the British 8th Army, he was outfought by Rommel and so dismissed by Auchinleck and transferred to Northern Ireland; High Commissioner of Palestine (1945-48). <b>War-date</b> ALS, 2pp, 8vo, Aug 6, 1944. On Headquarters, Northern Ireland letterhead to Brigadier General Vanderveer at 5th Division Headquarters, US Army, regarding a gift from his wife. In part, “<i>I received recently from Mrs. Vanderveer a copy of ‘John Brown’s Body’...I am looking forward to reading the book and getting a more romantic and perhaps less pedantic view of those days...as I pen</i> [this] <i>your armored is reaching out and the situation is fraught with great possibilities. Good luck to you in your great battle. I only wish I was there to share it with you</i>...” Accompanied by stamped transmittal envelope. Also included are several magazine photographs of the illustrious British general in Africa. Plus an ALS by Col. </span><b><span style='font-size:9.0pt;font-family: Arial;color:windowtext;text-transform:uppercase'>W. A. Hawkins</span></b><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Arial; color:windowtext'>, a member of the British Joint Staff in Washington, to Mrs. Vanderveer conveying his appreciation for the gift of a copy of the same book.</span></p>

Internet Live Bid Auction and is conducted under the laws of the State
of West Virginia by Gil Griggs, Licensee of Charleston, W. V. License
No. 002.
2. Absentee bid closing date is April 5th, 2002, 10:00 PM EST.
3. There is a 15% Buyer’s Premium charged on the final hammer price
of each lot. An additional 2½% Premium will be added to any lots
purchased through ebayliveauctions.com.
4. The Auctioneer reserves the right to reject any bid for any

14. Golden Guarantee: All material is returnable within seven day
