SIMON METCALF
(c. 1735-1794) American surveyor and possibly the first fur trader in the Pacific; sailed to Hawaii providing King Kamehameha supplies and arms in his battles to unify the Hawaiian islands, killed during a sailing expedition to the Queen Charlotte Islands by natives. Very rare A.D. (unsigned), 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d. but ca. 1770], being notes on a survey entitled "Palmer Run", likely in the Mohawk Valley, in part: "...To Fix the Sixth Tract Granted to G. Wm. Lowdlow. We began at 7ch measured S. 55 W from two large Pine trees marked with three notches standing on the South Side of a brook where a small run of water runs into the said brook. Then from the end of the 7ch. Marked a Chestnut oak. Then N. 35 W 30ch to the line he ran for the widow Ingleby...He went to the SW Corner of COngreve's Tract to the Easternmost Corner of the 6th Tract at the Chestnut oak he had marked..., and so forth. Folds, toned and ragged at edges, a bit fragile, still very legible, mounted into an archival folder. Along with two fine original land grant drawings of land in Lake Champlain and Vermont, ca. 1772, separate oblong 4to. sheets, in pencil. These very detailed drawings offer a topographical look at the area. Badly wrinkled and toned with fold tears, and mounted into archival folders. Docketed as being from the papers of Simon Metcalfe, three pieces.

Estimate: $1,000 - 1,500.
