SILVER GEORGE III ENTREE SERVER ENGLISH
SILVERPLATE: A superb George III entree server in plated silver on copper, rectangular with gadroon edge, with an attached lid handle and a crest mark impressed on both sides with the inscribed motto, ''HAUD INFERIORA SECUTUS'' (Not Having Mean Pursuits). The set consists of a base and a lid with a fixed handle, all English hallmarked and attributed to Robert Allen Cox (RC with a dot in center between the R and the C). He was an apprentice to Humphry Payne in 1745, to John Payne in 1750, and became a freeman in 1752. He was a registered maker in 1752, 1758, 1759, Liverpool in 1791, and elected to court in 1813. During the period of 1775 to about 1832, there was a transition to Sheffield-style markings. While the markings are lion passant, crown, initial N, and a king's head to indicate London and the date of 1800-1801, the method is Sheffield plating. Measures 11 3/8'' x 8 1/2'' x 5 1/2''. Some minor surface scratches commensurate to age, a small 3/4'' long rub mark through the silver to copper base on lid, and several minor indentations all noted.
