SILVER BAR #1774-S 999.5 5.24 OZ [L#2319
Silver bars such as the one shown above could be obtained at the San Francisco Mint in the 1940’s on request by either payment of the value of the bar, or in exchange for assayed silver submitted for refining. There are a variety of sizes and weights as well as a few different types of stamps available on the market today.

Some bars have the oval stamp like this one, with the words “MINT OF THE UNTIED STATES AT SAN FRANCISCO” surrounding a wide winged eagle presenting a shield holding a branch and arrows. The round stamped type has the words “U.S. MINT SAN FRANCISCO” surrounding a somewhat different depiction of the eagle.

Although these bars are not necessarily considered to be “rare” compared to other types of coinage (such as Pioneer gold), they are definitely very popular among collectors of all kinds. This particular bar is approximately 1” x 2” x ¾” and has a small evaluation edge cut on the side with the weight designation. Many of these bars come with partial stamps (poor strikes), but this one is a very nice example with a great strike and clear detail.
