SIGNED KENTUCKY CHEST OF DRAWERS. An outstanding and most unusual signed Kentucky walnut chest of drawers, circa 1840-50. This Empire period chest has 1 larger overhanging drawer over 3 graduated drawers, all with cock-beaded edges. The front stiles have 3/4 columns with turned capital and base, with the body of the column carved in a pineapple-style, above tapered turned feet. The stiles flanking the top drawer have inlayed burled walnut gothic arches with canted corner base. Drawer dividers have cross-banded inlay. The top has central well flanked by 2 cock bead-edged drawers with burled walnut fronts, each flanked by a pair of 3/4 rope turned columns with biscuit corner top. Both have unusual double gallery with baluster turnings and great scrolled chair arm-like top. These drawers are mortised through the figural backsplash, which have two cutout eagle heads with maple inlayed eyes with cherry pupils. This piece is signed on rear in chalk "Made and Sold by J. Tompkins, Elizabeth Town, Co. Ky." The chest has walnut and poplar secondary woods and is 61" high x 42.75" wide x 24.5" deep. Nice reproduction period base pulls and great color. Old refinishing with great color, back-splash top has been snapped off and reattached, replaced molding strips along right and left sides at base.
