This beautiful bronze sculpture is known as "The Exotic Dancer", one of the many of Chiparus' famous artworks. Here you see a dancer from the Ballet Russe also known as the Russian Ballet. This agile dancer performs an unforgettable dance, one that Chiparus has decided to capture for life. Here she is shown kneeling on one knee while her other leg is straight out in front of her. She leans back using her one arm to support her as her other arm gracefully falls back around her head. By extending her arm and leg it elongates her body and opens her bodice to give the sculpture more dimensions. She wears a leotard which is skin tight against her upper body and her skirt has slights exposing her thighs. Her gold belt is thick and accentuates her waist as it rests against her red dress. She has gold beads that string across her neck and she wears gold bangles on her wrists. She wears a headpiece that matches her ensemble and is adorned with intricate gold beads. This bronze sculpture portrays the flexibility and agility of the ballet dancer beautifully. This sculpture was cast using the "Lost Wax Method" and has a red, gold and brown patina. This sculpture is handmade and 100% bronze, it is signed D.H. Chiparus. Demetre Haralamb Chiparus (also known as Dumitru Chiparus; 16 September 1886, Dorohoi, Romania - 22 January 1947, Paris, France) was a Romanian Art Deco era sculptor who lived and worked in Paris. He was born in Romania, the son of Haralamb and Saveta. In 1909 he went to Italy, where he attended the classes of Italian sculptor Raffaello Romanelli. In 1912 he traveled to Paris to attend the Ecole des Beaux Arts to pursue his art at the classes of Antonin Mercie and Jean Boucher.
