SIGNED CDV OF MAJOR GENERAL A.S. WILLIAMS. Published wartime view of Alpheus Starkey Williams as Brigadier General wearing two star badges of the 12th/20th Corps. Cartes is ink-signed in Williams' bold hand on verso using his Bvt. Major General's rank dating the signature to after January 1866. Williams commanded a division in the 12th Corps and later the consolidated 20th Corps in the west, but never achieved permanent corps assignment. Democratic politics consumed William's post-war career until his death in 1878. Cartes is near MINT with strong tones and sharp clarity. Provenance: Mickle album.
