SIGMAR POLKE (German, b. 1941) UNTITLED (QUETTA, PAKISTAN) signed in pencil on verso toned gelatin silver print 25 x 38 in. (63.5 x 96.5 cm) 1974 ESTIMATE: $25,000-35,000 PROVENANCE Acquired directly from the artist by Nathalie Karg, NEW YORK Robert Miller Galley, NEW YORK LITERATURE SIGMAR POLKE PHOTOWORKS: WHEN PICTURES VANISH, Los Angeles, 1995, pp. 154-163, pl. 80-86, (variants from Quetta, Pakistan series illustrated with hand-painting) Perhaps due to his background as a painter, Polke delighted in violating the standard techniques of photographic printing. The result of these experiments were incorporated into many of his paintings. In other examples from this series of men in an opium den in Pakistan, he painted directly onto the photographs, highlighting every scratch and defect with bright colors.
