SIGEL, FRANZ
(1822 - 1899) Union brigadier general who repulsed the Confederates at Cheat Mountain and held that portion of West Virginia for the Union. He also served at Chattanooga and Chicamauga. War-date A.L.S. "F. Sigel" adding rank, 2pp. 4to., "Headquarters, First Corps, Army of Virginia", Aug. 18, 1862, to Governor Morgan of New York, in part: "…I have been compelled to request the War Department, to muster out…Col. Dickel of the 4th New York Cavalry…at the present time…[he]…is absent without leave…I would therefore…request your excellence to appoint…Colonel Cesnola…[and]…to recruit the ranks of said regiment…". Apparently, Sigel's letter had the desired effect and Dickel was removed from command the following month. Very good.
