SHORT, WALTER C.
(1880 - 1949) American general responsible for the air and ground defense of Pearl Harbor. After the Japanese attack, Short and Adm. Husband E. Kimmel were relieved of command and blamed for the debacle. However, an inquiry surmised that officials in both Washington and Hawaii were derelict. Very rare good content A.L.S. "W. C. Short", 2pp. 4to., Fort Bliss, Texas, Mar. 6, 1930 to his friend A. Hartwell Carter, General Manager of the enormous Parker Ranch in Hawaii from which Short and his friend, Gen. George S. Patton, purchased thoroughbred horses. In part: "…I feel as though you have done too much, because I did not expect to get any colt from my mare and I think the present to the Government of that splendid four year old colt is enough. I shall school [the colt] myself…and then turn it over to the team. If it makes I good, I shall name the horse 'Alfred Carter'…your horses are wonderful. I have left to Major [George S.] Patton all the arrangements for getting the horses to the mainland…Major Patton is in Washington where he can get things done by personal contact…". Very good, with related correspondence. A rare letter, and a great association!
