SHIRLEY, WILLIAM
(1693 - 1771) Colonial Governor of Massachusetts and Commander in Chief of British forces in North America in the French and Indian War. Boldly signed D.S. "W. Shirley" as a governor in the Bahamas, 1p. oblong large 4to., New-Providence Island, Apr. 2, 1768, to Surveyor John Pratt, in part: "You are directed…to measure and lay out unto John Brown Esq. a certain Tract of Two hundred acres of unimproved Land…". Interestingly, Brown's neighbor was to be a Mr. John Cooper who was a merchant and possible slave owner from Charleston, S.C. Fold affects one letter of signature, else very good.
