SHERMAN, WILLIAM T.
(1820 - 1891) Union major general declared by the press to be "insane", he led his army in their March to the Sea, taking Atlanta, Savannah and Columbia along the way. A.L.S. "Sherman General", 2pp. 8vo. on Army headquarters letterhead, Washington, Jan. 2, 1872 to Richard Cutts. The hen-pecked Sherman writes, in part: "…Mrs. Sherman is…willing to dispose of the Billiard Table which she thinks a nuisance…It has cues, balls, [?] & everything and you can name your own price…[my wife] is prepared to spend the money, at ten minutes notice…you can account to me when flush…" Very good.
