SEWALL, STEPHEN
American attorney and public official, court clerk during the Salem Witch Trials and brother of Judge Samuel Sewall. During the hysteria, Sewall also took in the mother of Helen Parris, the preacher's daughter whose strange symptoms first brought about charges of witchcraft. Rare good content manuscript D.S. "Stephen Sewall", 1p. 8vo., Rowley, Mass., 1669, his attestation on a fair copy of the minutes of a town meeting in which it is ordered that the inhabitants will contribute to the maintenance and support of a farm occupied by a minister, and: "…that the benefit of the fores'd farme shall belong to the minister at that place where they have an orthodox minister…". Typical marginal toning and slight soiling, overall very good.
