Ecuelle and cover on a matching underplate with outstanding handpainted fruit and flowers. Sold to me as Sevres, made France circa 1860. However, Godden's books on early English porcelain show very similar painting done by Thomas Steel (e) who worked at Derby, Rockingham and Minton and since much Minton porcelain of that period was unmarked / dubiously marked, there is a possibility it came from that factory and dates to 1832-50, when Steele worked there. (see page 282 Godden's book on early Minton).
Plate is 8 1/8inch diam. Ecuelle is 4 1/2inches to top of handle; 5 inches in diameter, excluding handles.
Puce / pink ground. Reserves surrounded with raised gold scrolling and floral borders, in turn surrounded by beautiful grass, scrolls and 'jewels' in raised gold. Inside the reserves are handpainted with fruit and flowers - quite exquisite - each vignette is a miniature work of art in itself.
Handles in the form of branches - very richly gilded.
There are some incised marks - crossed lines, a Y and a 6. Again, the crossed lines were often used by Minton during the early part of the 1800's, in immitation of Meissen.
Condition is excellent. No chips/cracks/damage. There is minor loss to the gilding in the center of the plate where the bowl would rub against it.
