SERGEI KOROLEV: (1907 - 1966) Chief designer and architect of the Soviet space program, the genius and inspiration behind Soviet space exploration, his very existence was kept a secret. In 1933, the group was reorganized into the Jet Propulsion Research Institute, where Korolev led the development of cruise missiles and of a manned rocket-powered glider.
