Certificate: Alexis Poliakoff, 30 Dec. 1999. Provenance: Dutch Private Collection. When comparing the technique employed in the works created between 1946 and 1952, one notices the change in Poliakoff's personal intellectual approach to painting. In drawing distinct lines, he seeks to impose on his composition a web of control containing the areas of colour from the outside and lending them the character of constituent panels that need to be filled with colour. However, once the line serves only to connect different shapes, the painter has begun to trust the colour dynamic, allowing the shapes themselves to determine the modalities of their environment through the clever interplay of their tensions.
