SECTION OF ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH CABLE AND LETTER OF AUTHENTICITY.
SECTION OF ATLANTIC TELEGRAPH CABLE AND LETTER OF AUTHENTICITY. This 4" long section of TransAtlantic Cable comes with the original certification that was issued by Tiffany's with these souvenirs. This piece is from the 1858 cable, which was the first to actually function for a short time. The certificate of authenticity is dated: "New York, Aug. 21st 1858. This is to certify that I have sold the balance of the Atlantic Telegraph Cable now on board of the U.S.S.F. "Niagara" to Messrs. Tiffany & Co. Jewellers No. 550 Broadway of this city, and that the piece which accompanies this, is a genuine section thereof. Yours, C.W. Field [Cyrus W. Field - promoter of the cable project]." Cable has brass ends, missing brass plate with Tiffany identification from center of cable section. Document slightly toned at top; some marks that appear to be rust stains near bottom, but it is taped between 2 pieces of glass and was not removed for examination.
