197. [SECESSIONVILLE]

under heavier fire than “at the barbardment of pulaski"
Five days before the Battle of Secessionville, Union soldier Charles E. Palmer, 7th CT, writes to Steve Hubbard. Superb war-date ALS, 8pp, small 4to, James Island, Jun 11, 1862. Battle content. “Encamped 5 miles from Charleston...in sight of Fort Sumter! And by God’s help we are going to take them within two weeks!” Palmer enthusiastically declares. Arriving at North Edisto on board the Cosmopolitan from garrison duty at Fort Pulaski, he describes the march of 4,000 troops of infantry, cavalry and artillery. In small part, “Picketing was a little lively, rebel cavalry scouts hovering about at night...” Arriving at Legaretown, “a sort of Sunday resort for the Charleston roughs and is built a good deal on the principle of Hoboken, I slept on a billiard table that night. We found Stevens Brigade had already landed on the other side, and were encamped under cover of the gunboats. They had a sharp engagement in which lives were lost on both sides...and drove the enemy back some three miles to a place called Secessionville where they now are supposed to be strongly fortified...Sometimes the Secesh would swoop down and gobble our pickets...We were ordered into line to make a reconnaissance in force on the enemy’s left...We defiled along the banks of the river about two miles and pushed up into the woods directly at the enemy. A mile and a solitary musket from our advance skirmishers tell us that the enemy is found. Pop! Pop! Pop! go half a dozen in quick succession. We had evidently come upon and drove in their advance picket...the cavalry went to the front and gave chase. The rebels took to the bushes and escaped capture...The day before the 3d New Hampshire boys had made a rush and captured a post of four prisoners. As soon as the rebels found it out they commenced shelling the woods where our men were stationed...We were under a heavier fire however than we had to stand at the bombardment of Pulaski...Yesterday the rebels made a dash, but were driven back with a loss of 17 which they left on the field. Our side had three killed members of the 97th Pennsylvania. One of the rebel dead was a Georgia captain...When the grand engagement for the possession of the island will take place I can’t tell...When will the war end?...It seems as if the scoundrels could not by any possibility hold out much longer, but they do seem dreadfully in earnest...” Boldly penned in brown ink. Horizontal folds almost entirely separated with no paper loss repaired with clear tape; minor edge nicks; light soiling and occasional foxing; else VG/Fine.
