[SCOTTSBORO CASE] Famed legal case stemming from the arrest in 1931 of nine young blacks in Scottsboro, AL, for the alleged rape of two white girls. The evidence against them largely consisted of the testimony of the girls, one of whom subsequently recanted. However, eight of the accused were sentenced to death and the ninth, only 13 years old, to life imprisonment. At the time, many Americans considered the verdict unfounded and brought about by racial bias. Five of the original indictments were eventually dropped. The remaining four men received lengthy prison terms. Offered is an intact unsigned petition, ca. 1937, directed to Governor Frank Dixon requesting a pardon for “the remaining five Scottsboro defendants” submitted by the Scottsboro Defense Committee comprising several civil rights and social organizations. Fine example. Plus a b/w, 7”x9” Acme press photograph of Mrs. Victoria Price as she appeared in court for jury selection, one of the two women who originally accused the “Scottsboro Boys.” Stamped Apr 22, 1933 on verso with press attribution. Light scoring at edge; 1½” tear with no paper loss tape repaired on verso.
