SCOTT [Sir Walter]
Autograph letter written on 2 sides to an unknown recipient, in Scott's hand and with his signature. The letter is addressed from Abbotsford, undated, but probably in 1811. There is some staining of the paper, and the paper is split along the original folds of the letter.
Note: The letter is about the possibility of Scott editing the literary remains of the orientalist, linguist and friend of Scott, John Leyden (1775-1811). Scott asks the recipient to supply him with various
details of Leyden's birth and education, etc. with a view to contributing a memorial to the Edinburgh annual register and which was published in the Register 1811. The recipient, whose name may be concealed by the frame, may be the Revd.
Alexander Murray of Urr, Castle Douglas, with whom Scott was in correspondence about Leyden's works. The present letter may well not be published.
With 2 further items. The first a framed letter cover in
Scott's hand addressed to Mr. Robert Leyden, the brother of John Leyden: the other, a framed promissary note for £50.00 from John Leyden, dated 1802, to Captain Robert Scott, Scott's favourite uncle. The verso of the note bears a receipt signed by Robert Shortreed, Scott's sheriff substitute for
Roxburghshire [3].
