<td width="100%">
Absolutely charming old double school slate that opens out ilke a book. The slate is on all sides (front, back, inside both sides), framed by wood. The wood has some child's pencil markings on it (not gouged in, so can be easily sanded), and a small area with very faint marker (also easily sanded). The grain looks like tiger eye maple. Surrounding the frame is a soft textile, maybe cotton batting, to protect little arms; this is bound to the wood with wound blue string. The two boards are fastened together with a sturdy pink cotton "ribbon." Taped to the inside on the bottom is the owner's name and date: Dione Starling, 1913. There is a 2 inch long place on the top of one side where the cotton batting has come off. I have left it in the condition I found it in because I like the bits of history left by generations of children.
