SCARCE MAUSER C96, EARLY TRANSITIONAL LARGE RING,
BRITISH MILITARY ACCEPTED WITH SHOULDER STOCK. Cal. 7.63mm. S# 12442. This is an example of Mauser's earliest Large Ring pistols that were assembled using Conehammer bolts and frames, later accepted for use by the British military. The pistol has a 5.5" bbl. w/ a fixed front sight & a pinned 50-500 graduated rear sight. Long extractor, early safety & independently secured firing pin. Top of chamber has the usual Mauser address. Crown/"C"/"U" on left side of bbl. extension; antler proof on right. Full S# is on back of frame. Upon British issue, the left side of the bbl. extension was impressed w/ a pair of bracketing broad arrow markings; British broad arrow acceptance and issue markings are on either side of the barrel extension. Major components rust blued. Most sm. parts fire blued; bolt, hammer, trigger & subframe are in the white. Detailed disassembly shows nearly all the usual parts matched w/ either full S# or last few digits including firing pin, locking block & each of the serrated wood panels. Floorplate is numbered "8951". Lanyard ring present. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: accompanied by a later era Mauser banner shoulder stock w/ lug numbered "464". CONDITION: overall very good, w/ handling marks & fading blue, especially on bbl., front of mag. well & front strap, commensurate w/ a pistol that has seen moderate field use. Comparable spotting & wear of the fire blued parts, sight bar having been cleaned along its graduations. Grips with dark oil staining and a scattering of handling marks. Generally bright bore w/ oxidation/roughness in grooves, easily discernable rifling. Perfect manual mechanics. Good stock w/ carrier related discoloration, numerous handling marks, 3" crack at upper spine extending into grip cutout. Hinge & lug w/ considerable oxidation. Pistol fits well in stock, lid closing, but lug will need fitting as it will not fully enter the slot. (01-22328/LMA). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
