SCARCE & INTERESTING ROSS MODEL 1910 STRAIGHT PULL

SPORTING RIFLE. Cal. 280 Ross. S# 7896. The 280 Ross cartridge was introduced around 1905 for Ross straight pull rifles & gained a good reputation in the far corners of the world for its lighting like killing ability on thin-skinned game due to its very high muzzle velocity (approaching 3,000 ft. per second for 140 gr. bullet). With the model 1910 popularity continued & most 1910 sporters are made in this caliber. This example has a 28" lightweight bbl. fitted w/ folding leaf express rear sight marked for 0 & 500yds. & silver bead front in sleeve on short ramp. Rear of bbl. marked ".280 Ross" "PROVED 28 TONS". Left side stamped "Made in Canada" & w/ S#. Top of action engraved "ROSS RIFLE CO" "CANADA" "1910" "Patented". Straight pull bolt w/ interrupted thread locking lugs has safety lever at right rear & bolt head is numbered to this rifle. Classically styled buttstock of lightly fiddle figured European walnut measures 13 3/4" over checkered steel buttplate. Point pattern checkering is around grip & forend & stock features schnabeled forend tip & sling eyes. CONDITION: very good to fine. Metal parts retaining about 80% original blue w/ most loss on floorplate & trigger guard from normal hand wear. (22-1982/MGM). CURIO. $800-1,200.
