SCARCE HENRY CLAY "COON" HAT BADGE. A great brass 5 x 3.5" shell pin from the 1844 election depicting a raccoon thumbing his nose. The raccoon was a Whig attempt to make the aristocratic Clay appear as a rustic woodsman, and appears on banners and ribbons with variants of "Old Kentucky" and " I'm That Same Old Coon." The large size of this piece suggests its use on a tall hat. EXC, with great patina, complete with pin.
