ENFIELD MK1 BOLT ACTION MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 303 Brit. S# 5631. Bbl. 30". Numbers match on receiver & bolt. These rifles were the first to be made w/ the new 5 groove Enfield rifling w/ its sharp cornered lands. Metford rifling had not been found satisfactory due to wear from cordite ammunition. These rifles feature a sliding dust cover, safety mounted on cocking piece, mag. cut off in receiver, volley sights & 10 rd. mag. attached to rifle w/ chain link. Butt socket marked on right side w/ crown "V.R." "L.S.A. CO." "L.D." "1896" "LE" "1". Receiver ring has view marks on right side. Bbl. marked over chamber with "E" indicating Enfield rifling. Ladder rear sight graduated to 1,800yds. Ramp type front sight w/ sight blade offset slightly to the left which is correct for this rifle. Volley sights are present. Rifle has rare correct cleaning rod w/ faint view mark. Upper band has bayonet bar & stacking swivel. Walnut stock set. Buttstock has manufacturer's Roundel marked "LONDON" & "broad arrow". Two Roman numeral ones; the first means a MK1 rifle, the lower one means 1st Class Arm. Buttstock also marked "M& D". Militia & Defense indicating Canadian ownership. Buttstock has additional view marks underneath grip. Brass trap buttplate. Buttplate tang has view marks & "82" & "94". Correct unmarked leather sling. MAGS: 1 factory 10 rd. attached w/ chain link. CONDITION: stock set has original finish w/ light wear & handling marks commensurate w/ careful service use. Markings are crisp & legible. Handguard has fine full length crack at top. Metal has lg. percentage of original blue finish w/ areas thinning & turning gray. Bore has moderately worn lands w/ frosting in grooves. (01-20966/RW). ANTIQUE. $900-1,200.
