What a really rare piece this it. Not only does it have the old scarab but it has a flag from the 1800?s on its back. The pin stem is 10kt gold. The top is not. Not the best shape but such a rare piece that I doubt you will ever see another like it. This measures 2" long. IT is all original. Just a little history on how insects became a part of the fashion world. The aesthetic period brought about some of the most unusual pieces .In the late 1800's, Darwin's controversial theories on evolution, as well as new botanical discoveries taking place, created quite an interest in the natural world. Personal adornments and vanity items reflected these new interests with jewelry created in forms of insects and animals.
