SAYBROOK, CT DEEDS/LAND SALE DOCUMENTS, 1780s-1790s.
A group of eight Connecticut deeds/land transfer documents, 1783-1793, each with multiple signatories: 1. BEAUMONT, SAMUEL, and TULLY, SAMUEL. Single-sheet, written on one side; addressed and noted as entered in the records April 23, 1792, Saybrook. Regarding a land investment partnership with Daniel Ingraham, comprising John Cochran's land; signed by Beaumont; written and signed by Samuel Tully, Justice of the Peace; witnessed by Izariah Pratt. 9 3/4in. x 7 3/4in. Condition: Two vertical and at least two horizontal folds; fold tears, incl. one approx. 3in. long; toning, large areas of old dampstaining. 2. ELY, JOHN, and DENYSON, SAMUEL. Single-sheet deed, dated October 13, 1783, noting receipt by Denison of "forty two pounds from John Ely of Say Brook," for land Denison bought from Capt. Joseph Lee; with an addendum regarding Lewis Jones "also included in this defence." Also signed by John(?) Shipman and Lucretia Ely, and entered into the Saybrook Records by Samuel Tully. 12in. x 14 1/2in. Condition: One vertical and at least five horizontal folds; toning, foxing/soiling; edge folds/tear; remnant wax seal. 3. JONES, MORRIS, and LAY, JONATHAN. Single-sheet deed, noting payment to Jones from Sylvester Stannard of Say Brook, for purchase of land, dated 14, April 1792. Signed by Jones, Jonathan Lay, Justice of the Peace, witnessed by Anne Lay; entered into the Saybrook Record by Samuel Tully. 12 3/4in. x 8in. Condition: Two vertical and three horizontal folds; toned with large dampstains at folds and margins; edge tears/folds; wax seal remnants. 4. KELEY, EPHRAIM. Single folded sheet, written on one half; addressed and noted as witnessed by Geo. Chapman, Justice (of the) Peace, February 7, 1783; and entered into the Saybrook records May 1, 1783. Regarding purchase of land by Ezra Bushnell (from Keley?). Signed by Keley; witnessed by John Hamond(?) Junior(?), and Zebulon Jones. 12in. x 15in. (unfolded). Remnant wax seal. Condition: Approx. seven vertical and three horizontal folds; fold tears, incl. two approx. 1/2in. to 1in.; edge tears and folds; toning, foxing/soiling. 5. LAY, JONATHAN, and DENYSON, SAMUEL. Single sheet; addressed to Labeus Chapman and noted as entered into the Saybrook record by S. Tully, March 9, 1792. Concerning the sale of "a certain piece of salt meadow" by Denyson, to Chapman. Signed by Denyson with an "X"; signed/witnessed by Jonathan Lay and Ann Pratt. Remnant wax seal. 13in. x 7 3/4in. Condition: Two vertical and two horizontal folds; fold tears; edge folds; toning, foxing, soiling/old dampstains. 6.-7. LYNDE, SAMUEL, and TULLY, SAMUEL. Two Single-sheet deeds dated May 5th and October 21st, 1790, Saybrook. One concerning payment from Samuel Beaumont, for land conveyed to Lynde from George Griswold of Lyme; signed by Lynde, Samuel Tully, Justice of the Peace, and witnessed by Sarah Tully. The other concerning payment from Samuel Beaumont and Daniel Ingrhaham, for a piece of land "lying in the Watering pond Lane," purchased from George Griswold of Lyme; signed by Lynde, Samuel Tully, witnessed by Sarah Tully, entered into Saybrook Records by Samuel Tully. 8 5/8in. x 7 13/16in.; and 8 5/16in. x 7 7/8in. Condition: Each with three vertical and at least one horizontal fold; toned/foxed; fold tears; edge tears (incl. one approx. 1in.). 8. PRATT, HUMPHREY, and TULLY, SAMUEL. Single-sheet, written on one side; addressed and noted as entered in the records April 11, 1793, Saybrook. Regarding Pratt's purchase of John Cochran's land. Written and signed by Samuel Tully, Justice of the Peace; signed by Humphrey Pratt, Junior(?). Witnessed by Samuel Tully, and Sarah Tully. 9 1/2in. x 7 7/8in. Condition: Three vertical and one horizontal and other folds; toning. This lot and the other Chapman-related items offered in this sale were part of a collection of papers and ephemera related to the family of Edward Mortimer Chapman (1862-1952), a Connecticut pastor, academic, and author, and a descendant of Robert Chapman, one of the first settlers of Saybrook, Connecticut (c. 1635).
