<B>SAW-SCALED VIPER</B></I><BR><BR> <I>Echis carinatus</B></I><BR>This snake can be found in peninsular India, Ceylon and westward to equatorial Africa. It only grows to an average of two feet in length, but it can be very dangerous as it has a habit of lying in the sand with only its head exposed. It is a nervous snake, quick to strike, with the ability to fling itself in the air to deliver a bite. Its venom is extremely toxic and the bite is often fatal. If disturbed, the Saw-Scaled Viper inflates its body, so that the saw-toothed keels on the scales at the side of the body stick out; it then throws its body into loops, scraping one against another and producing a noise like a violent bubbling.
