Ede, Harold Stanley. Savage Messiah. New York:
Alfred A Knopf, 1931
Savage Messiah is
collector and curator Jim Ede's biography of French sculptor
Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (1891-1915). Although he had no formal
training and his artistic career lasted only four years, Gaudier
was a very influential figure in 20th C art. He believed sculpture
should be rough and the tool marks are the artist's fingerprints.
His work is powerful and, in its way, quite beautiful. Gaudier
lived in an intense, symbiotic relationship with Polish writer
Sophie Brzeska (1871?-1925) and adopted her surname
although they never married. Ede's major sources are the
couple's letters and Sophie's diaries.

8 x 10-1/4 x 1-3/8 inches. 260 pages bound in black
cloth. Printed on custom rag paper. Includes photos of Gaudier
and his works.
