Politically savvy wife of the eleventh President of the United States (1845-49) who after her husbands passing, continued to live at “Polk Place” in Nashville. The house became a place of pilgrimage during the Civil War. Mrs. Polk held herself above sectional strife and received with dignity leaders of both Confederate and Union armies, all of whom respected Polk Place as neutral ground. ALS “<i>Mrs. James K.
