SAMUEL W CRAWFORD (1829-92) Union Brigadier General; Fort Sumter Post Surgeon, who rose to lead a division in 5th Corps; commanded Pennsylvania Reserves at Gettysburg. Wardate ALS, "S W Crawford", 4pp, Nov 16, 1863, 4to, Hdqtrs Penn Reserves letterhead, Camp at Mountain ?, to another General, excellent content. In part, "...We are here midway between the Rappahannock & the Rapidan awaiting orders to move to the front...The enemy are strongly entrenched along the Rapidan...I think it is the wish of Genl [George] Meade to attack the enemy there. He is anxious to suddenly seize the Fredericksburg heights, this would compel [Robert] E Lee to fall back below Richmond...We have one other course & that is to turn his left and go for Gordonville [?]...I have never known the army in such spirit...Our men believe that the enemy are afraid of them...I should like very much to talk over our Corps Commanders with you. Some change there is necessary before the Army is in complete fighting condition. Our hearts are set upon keeping our men with us. Next year their time expires...I need not say to you how important it is now that the end of the rebellion is near, for us to retain veteran troops accustomed to meet the enemy...I trust you will not forget to assist me in my promotion. I had supposed that 'Gettysburg' would have secured it, but it has not yet been made..." VG. $750-1,000
