SAMUEL P. LEE
(1812 - 1897) Union rear admiral and a relative of Robert E. Lee, he commanded various blockading squadrons and was active at Vicksburg. A fine war-date L.S. as Acting Rear Admiral on "US Flag Ship Minnesota, off Newport News, Va." letterhead, 1pp. 4to., May 25, 1863, addressed to Acting Master Gregory, USS Western World. In part: "...I returned herewith for full explanations a communication from Acting Ensign John Ross of the 'Western World'...submitting a bill for fifteen dollars ($15) which amount, he asserts was expended by him for subsistence of the prize crew of the Schooner 'A. Carson'...". Fine. On April 24, 1863 the USS Western World and the USS Samuel Rotan captured the Carson along with the British schooner Martha Ann off Horn Harbor, Virginia.
