SAMUEL P. LANGLEY
(1834 - 1906) American aviation pioneer who explored the possibility of flight by heavier-than-air machines and actually succeeded in inventing such a machine which flew over the Potomac for 3,000 feet. A.L.S. 3pp. 8vo., Washington, May 9, 1905, on Smithsonian Institute letterhead to Mrs. Michaelis, wife of Capt. Otho Michaelis of the U. S. Signal Corps. In part: "...Yours of April 15, which speaks of two expected visitors to Washington, Mr. Scully and Mr. Jones, has been held here awaiting them...I should have been glad to welcome any friends of yours. I was sorry not to see you at my late brief visit..." and more social content. Very good condition.
