ALS, signed "Saml Jones", 4pp, Nov 20, 1875, 8vo, Baltimore, to Col Charles C Jones in New York, nice content re Confederate Brigadier General Robert S Garnett (1819-61), who was killed (July 13, 1861) while fighting a rear guard action in Northwestern Virginia, becoming the first Confederate General to die in the war. Reads in part, "...I cannot give you any accurate information in regard to the composition of the command of Brig Genl R S Garnett. Where his command was organized, and where he was killed. I was so engrossed in my duties at Manassas that I could know little of other commands...you may obtain information on the subject from his father-in-law, Geo S Nelson...Garnett was a class mate and personal friend of mine and I am sure the South lost one of its most gallant and accomplished officers when he fell.
