SAMUEL F B MORSE (1791-1872) American inventor of the telegraph. ADS, "Saml F B Morse", 1p, May 10, 1843, 8"X2 1/2", receipt for his pay. Reads, "Received of the United States...One hundred and Sixty six dollars 66/100th in full for one month's salary up to date..." WITH an ADS, May 10, 1843, 8"X4 1/2", New York, from Alfred Vail (1807-59), who became associated with Morse in 1837 as constructor of instruments, and aided in financing early telegraph experiments. As chief assistant (post 1843) to Morse, he received the famous first test message 'What hath God wrought!", at Baltimore, May 24, 1844. Reads, "Received of Profer Morse the sum of one Hundred and Ten Dollars...the amount of my salary from the 31st of March 1843 (the date of my appointment,)..." In March of 1843, President John Tyler signed into law a bill granting Samuel Morse $30,000 to build the first wire communication network from Baltimore to Washington. Morse would document each expense in his hand with a voucher, keeping one for his records and sending the other to the Secretary of the Treasury for payment. Each month a statement would be sent in the form of a ledger sheet, which Morse would call an abstract. This lot consists of vouchers from Morse and his assistant, for his own salary and for Vail's first paycheck. Morse's voucher is also for his paycheck, "one month's salary", although we do not know whether it was his first. These documents come from the very beginning of the telecommunications revolution.
