SAMANID: Nuh II Ibn Nasr (943-954), AE Fals (1.91g), Ferghana Malik (Ferghana of Malik), AH 330. The mint name is cited with the following word Malik, referring to Malik Ibn Shakartegin's authority and rulership of Ferghana. A-1457. Very fine. Extremely rare.

What is remarkable about this piece is that it cites Malik's name as being a person of authority over Ferghana; however, this still does not necessary mean this Fals should be listed under the Samanids of Akhsikath since it still cites the Samanid ruler Nuh II Ibn Nasr as overlord in the reverse margin. This could be considered the beginning of Malik's ambitions of independence from the main Samanid line. Another interesting point on this Fals is that it cites Nuh II as being an overlord in the year AH 330, before Nuh's more usual accession date of AH 331.

This example appears to be the third known specimen, with the first appearing in Baldwin's Auction 45 (lot 2011) that sold for 200 GBP, and the other being on Zeno (#44502).
