SALT PRINT, 34th CONGRESS COMMITTEE
This is the Committee on Elections from this 1855-56 Congress. It had the minor task of certifying the credentials of those newly elected or reelected. Nevertheless a number of the members had important later careers. Standing, from L. to R., is Schuyler Colfax, later to be Grant's V.P.; Watson, from Ohio; Major Oliver, Missouri; and Francis Spinner, NY, who became Treasurer under Lincoln and subsequent Presidents. Seated are Hickman from PA; Smith from Alabama; Washburn from Maine, John Armour Bingham from Ohio, who was to preside over the trial of the Lincoln conspirators; and Stephens of GA who became VP of the Confederacy. 10 1/2" x 13 3/4" salted paper print on a mount that has imprinted identifications and a letterpress label. The print has some stains and is somewhat light, with the leftmost figures more faded. The mount is intact. [D2]
