In her MOTHERLAND series, Sally Mann photographed her native Virginia. DEEP SOUTH, by contrast, depicts the landscape of Mississippi and Louisiana, focusing on plantations that embody "the rivers of blood, of tears, of sweat that Africans poured into the dark soil of their thankless new home," the artist comments. In the present work, remnants of an abandoned plantation home resemble a forest of old trees that have witnessed a haunting history. The hazy chiaroscuro of this image, enhanced by toning with tea, generates the ghostly quality that Mann wished to capture.
